Mind
Meditation:
There are many types of mediation. You can do meditation seated, standing, moving, even doing daily chores. Some meditation is guided, some with vocalization and some silent. If you have tried meditation in the past and you did not like it. Try it again. Try a different type, or with a different teacher. Meditation is a lot like yoga, there are many types and many teachers and there is one just for you....you just have to find it.
I offer Yoga Nidra. Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation. It is guided in a very specific way though. Yoga Nidra guides you through the different levels of our body. Traditionally their are 5, although some philosophies add more. Simply they are Your Physical Body, Your Energy Body, Your Mental, Emotional and Sense Body, Your Wise Self, and Your Bliss Self. What I love most about Yoga Nidra is it can combine both Meditation and Restorative Yoga.
Why is meditation important?
In our lives and in our culture we are often externally focused, rushing from one task to the next. Or deeply internally focused in a negative way - judging ourselves. Generally, we do not take time to rest, to be still. To simply be and to listen. When we learn to be still and listen to our inner dialogue, and to sink deeper, we begin to see, we have an expansive space inside ourselves and within that we can hear our own true wisdom. As we practice accessing this space and wisdom we slowly begin to learn how to RESPOND to our world instead of REACT. When we can respond, we are able to make better choices for ourselves, our loved ones and our world. Oh, and there is a lot of science too. Studies have found that our health greatly improves with meditation. Our hearts become calmer, our immune system stronger, our brains grow, even the inflammation in our bodies recedes.
Why do restorative yoga?
Our bodies need rest. Real rest. Not rest in front of the computer or tv. But real quite rest. When we learn to rest our bodies, our nervous system can shift from fight or flight to a rest, digest and restore mode. Practicing resting also improves our sleep. In restorative yoga, we can place our bodies in positions that help not just our minds and hearts but also our bodies. Some postures can help relieve back pain, others can support the heart.
