Hello Friends! Welcome to January and 2018!!! I have heard from many of you that you are looking forward to the New Year. Many of you have expressed that you hope this New Year will bring you better health, vitality and vibrancy. I certainly wish that for myself as well! For over a year now, I have had very little success trying to lose the weight I gained while caring for my parents. So, I’m with you on that! Changing our lives is really less about external efforts and more about internal efforts. We must look deeply within to unpack the behaviors that lead us towards ill-health via poor choices. I just started the Habits for Happiness (http://www.sohapp.org/events.html) book for the month of January Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn and I find his words helpful. In the beginning of his book he talks about how we mostly move through life on automatic pilot, not really present in our choices. Yet, every choice we make builds the life we live. “Meditation is simply about being yourself and knowing something about who that is. It is about coming to realize that you are on a path whether you like it or not, namely, the path that is your life. Meditation may help us see that this path we call our life has direction; that it is always unfolding, moment by moment and that what happens now in this moment, influences what happens next.” Kabat-Zin recommends taking little moments in your day to become really present, to really experience the moment. Start off by asking the classic mindfulness question, ‘What is happening now?’ Then, answer that question, take a few breaths, and ask it again. Practicing this exercise just a few minutes throughout the day can help us connect a little more deeply with ourselves. At the beginning of January, we often rush to implement our grand New Year plan. This year, I encourage you to take some time to just sit with yourself with the intent to truly understand and articulate what it is you want to bring forth. Ask yourself ‘why do I want this?’ By taking the time to really understand the what and why, you lay the foundation for success. Once you have a clear idea of where you are going, shift your habits by only 5% or perhaps 15 minutes per day. It should be an amount that seems small and insignificant to you. Cate Stillman talks about this in her book Body Thrive, another excellent read for the beginning of the New Year. There is considerable research out there showing that small almost imperceptible changes that grow slowly over time can have a huge impact. Think of running water carving a canyon. My wish for you this New Year is that you find a place to be in this world while feeling whole, loved and healthy. Below is a list of my offerings. I hope to see you soon!
