How are you doing?  How are you coping?  Hopefully you have developed a new schedule for yourself. Have you figured out how to share space with your family? It can be challenging to find time to relax and enjoy each other’s company, yet also find the time to get your work or schoolwork done as well.

A common issue I hear from folks is how they can’t stop eating and snacking.  I know that when I feel stressed, overwhelmed, anxious or even bored, I eat more!  So, what can we do about this?
Every day I remind myself that I have 2 responsibilities right now. The first is to stay home and the second is to stay healthy.  What I eat is at the top of the list of things I can control.  I have found I really enjoy the Medical Medium series of books and I have been using his inspiration and recipes for healthy eating.

Here are some suggestions for you:
  1. Snack live first… eat fruit first for snack instead of cookies. Promise yourself to snack on fresh food first, then after you have had a live snack, wait 10 min before eating something else.
  2. At mealtime, fill half your plate with veggies.
  3. In the Medical Medium Liver Rescue Book, he suggests skipping the fat until 12pm so your liver has a little longer to do its house cleaning before doing the heavy lifting of processing fats.
  4. Eat vegan until dinner time.
  5. See how many different veggies you can eat in one day.
  6. If you can, plant a garden. Yes, I know this doesn’t address your immediate need, but it will get you outside and digging in the dirt which will help you feel grounded. In as little as a few weeks, you may even have food that you grew!!  Some good things to plant now are: radishes, kale, kohlrabi and snap peas.
  7. Try to eat at regular times. I have found, that eating every few hours works best to keep me from crashing and then binging.
  8. Make a meal plan.  I make one big meal, and plan to eat it for a day or two.  I try to always know what the next meal will be, so I won’t be caught struggling to find something to eat when I am hungry and stressed. Otherwise, I might end up eating a very large bowl of popcorn which would not be very nourishing for me. ☹
  9. Give thanks for your food. These veggies and fruits grew just for us to eat them. Take a minute to thank the food, the farmer, the picker, the trucker, the food stocker and the checkout clerk for your food.
  10. Skip anything in a box. You should be able to identify and even possibly find in your kitchen EVERY ingredient in what you are eating. You don’t find much live food in boxes.

We are not all made the same. Thank goodness! As such, each of our bodies require different nutrients and meal plans. Some of us need to eat more often than others.  Part of living this life is figuring out how best to care for our bodies. In Ayurveda, there are three primary types of folks. Within those three types, you can still have additional combinations of those types. So, as you can see, there can be quite a bit of variability between us.

If you have found that eating paleo works best for you, then eat paleo. Just make sure you eat good quality paleo food. If you prefer vegan, go for it! Just make sure you do eat plenty of veggies, not mostly pasta, rice and potatoes! If you are more of an omnivore… great! Try to eat as much variety as possible. If you have found that eating a big lunch or big breakfast supports you well then go for it!  Just make sure you pay attention to how you feel after you eat. You should feel satiated but not overburdened or sleepy. If you don’t feel great after eating, then why don’t you try eating a little differently?

Most of us don’t have long commutes right now. With this newfound extra time, try cooking some of your own meals.  Use this time to explore what truly nourishes you… and EAT LIVE FOOD peeps!!! 😊
